The Founder

Eric R. Dawicki, President of Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI), founded The Fairhaven Project in 2008. Dawicki, a fourth generation mariner, modeled the program on the critical needs of seamen to depend on each other – the thrill of sailing a tall ship, along with the life-and-death responsibility that goes along with it, requiring strong cooperation and personal bonding.

Dawicki fundamentally believes that terrorism is related to socio-economic disenfranchisement, and that teaching maritime skills to young adults from conflicted regions of the world will help to not only fill the shortage of commercial mariners worldwide, but also spur economic development and neutralize conflict regionally and internationally.

Under Dawicki’s direction, Northeast Maritime Institute has grown to become one of America’s finest maritime education and training providers. The Institute includes a world class ship simulation center with a full offering of U.S. Coast Guard approved courses and a full upgrade of teaching facilities. 1,300 mariners are trained annually. The motto “Honor the Mariner” holds true to his heart.

Dawicki, Chairman of the Board of the Northeast Group, LLC, also serves as President and CEO of the Commonwealth of Dominica Maritime Registry, Inc. (DMRI) and has helped establish DMRI as one of the fastest growing International Ship Registries in the world with a focus on quality and commitment to the mariner.  His companies operate in twenty-six offices worldwide.  A delegate to the United Nation’s International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Dawicki helped draft and implement the IMO’s International Ship and Port Security Code finalized in 2002, among other things.

Mr. Dawicki is active in preserving and promoting the maritime industry and currently serves on the Board of Directors for several maritime leadership, training and educational organizations, including the United States Coast Guard Foundation, and formerly Chairman of the Board of the American Sail Training Association. Other professional memberships include the United States Marine Safety Association, New Bedford Whaling Museum, Mystic Seaport, United States Naval Institute, Fairhaven Improvement Association, ASIS International (Advancing Security Worldwide) and American Association of Port Authorities.  Additional information is available at: www.northeastmaritime.com
